About the Disease
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that generally lack warning signs and which gradually impede vision. All forms of glaucoma damage the optic nerve, and are usually associated with abnormally high intraocular pressure (IOP, pressure within the eye).  If left untreated glaucoma may lead to blindness. While diagnosis and treatment options have improved, many patients still suffer from partial or total vision loss.  Risk factors for glaucoma include age, genetic history, diabetes, and nearsightedness.

About the Market
Glaucoma is estimated to affect 65 million people worldwide, including over 3 million Americans. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and is the leading cause of blindness in African-Americans.

The Lexicon Solution
As part of the Genome5000 project, Lexicon identified a kinase known as LG710 that regulates IOP.  Lexicon is developing small molecules that target LG710 to treat glaucoma.  These compounds lower IOP by increasing conventional fluid outflow in the eye, a novel mechanism not currently addressed by approved products.
