Ophthalmic diseases include macular degeneration, glaucoma and other significant diseases of the eye. Macular degeneration affects more than 10 million Americans according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, and is the leading cause of blindness in people 55 years of age or older. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States and affects more than 3 million Americans.
